If you’re destined to be single (yes, I know that begs the question but let it be for now) then it would be great to have the spiritual gift of celibacy. But what if you haven’t; if you’re single and discontent?

The only comfort I have is twofold: God’s word to Paul is also His word for us: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The other is a bon mot I heard years ago: Better to be single and wish you were married than to be married and wish you were single.

Sometimes comfort, like gazpacho soup, is served cold.
