btw, I don't consider you paranoid: I don't know anything about you, so it would be unfair to judge. I'm just aware, as you say, of humanity's skill at hurting one another.

Of course the best thing would be if everyone didn't want to hurt each other. And I don't like living in a world where I have to defend myself, with guns or in any other way. But there have always been people who consider that might makes right.

But wouldn't it be a good thing that you can't be attacked because your would-be attacker doesn't have the means? I'd prefer to be hit with a spitball rather than a bullet any day. Well, most days.

Yeah, look how well India's strict gun control laws work. The second amendment is all about self-defense and independence. I don't expect anyone who is a "subject" to comprehend or understand it. They don't need to.

Know this. The first revolution started over this issue, and I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but it is entirely possible that the second one could start over it as well. Won't be me initially, but if it starts and spreads, we could all end up involved in it on one side or the other.

I am not willing to restrict my freedom on some pipe dream that won't do a thing to prevent violence, suicides, or anything else. In fact, that might well have the opposite effect.

Let's look at what Australia's gun laws have accomplished.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1736501,00.html

Time magazine article detailing research literature review that concluded Australia has accomplished nothing. No measurable difference in firearms crime since the gun buy back and bans, which would surely result in bloodshed in this country.

Have your laws, if they make you happy. I have a right to life, a right to defend that life, and the right to the means to defend it. Without the right to the means to defend it, the right to life itself is meaningless.

You consider me paranoid, because I want a firearm on the off chance someone might attack me, my family, or neighbors? Yet, it is you who doesn't trust your neighbors and myself, or even yourself, with a firearm.

You say, "I'd hate to live in a world where I needed a gun to defend myself." Well, I'd hate to live in a world where I felt like the only thing preventing my neighbor or family from trying to kill me or themselves is the lack of the means. I'd hate to think we were really all so stupid as to not be able to figure out another method. If there is one thing we've all gotten much better at since we lived in caves and rubbed two sticks together to light a fire, it's killing and hurting ourselves and each other.

If you could make one thing happen, what would it be?

You might make all the guns disappear. Set us right back into the stone ages, where might made right.

I'd make all the people not want to kill each other or themselves, then the guns would be irrelevant. The nonissue they should be today.
